像百靈鳥般的高興。也就是表示興高采烈。
(據說雲雀或百靈鳥sing a lot)
例如:
After getting a good-paying job, Bob is as happy as a lark.
Bob找到一份高薪工作,高興極了。
I don't know why, but Ed has been as happy as a lark lately.
我不知為什麼,Ed近來總是興高采烈。
也可用多數:
Getting a ten percent payraise has made many employees as happy as larks.
許多員工獲得百分之十的加薪,高興得很。
註:在莎士比亞古文學裡,也用 as merry as a lark.
(10) as clear as crystal :
像水晶般的明亮;也是表示對事物很清楚或情況很晴朗。(very obvious about something)
例如:
Mr. A's intension toward Miss B is as clear as crystal.
A先生對B小姐的企圖是很明顯的。
The water in the pool has been as clear as crystal all this week.
本星期游泳池的水非常清潔明淨。
We can see his situation (or problem) as clear as crystal.
我們對他的情況看得很清楚。
這與俚語 as plain as the nose on your face意思相似。
Don't try to cover up your financial difficulty; it is as plain as the nose on your face.
不要掩飾你的經濟困難;那是顯而易見的。
(11) as cold as stone :
像石頭般的冷漠。表示缺乏感情的人。(one who shows no emotion or feeling)
例如:
He doesn't want to make a friend with Mary who is as cold as stone.
他不想與Mary為友,因為她冷淡無情。
Mr. Wang seems as cold as stone toward the unfortunate or under-priviledged.
王先生對那些貧窮的人似乎很冷漠。
(這裡的stone當集合名詞,故用單數,前面也不用冠詞,但也有人把stone當普通名詞,說成as cold as a stone,這時可用多數:
Do you care about those who are as cold as stones?
你在乎那些冷漠無情的人嗎?
(12) as cool as a cucumber :
照字義,像黃瓜那樣的涼爽;指在困難或緊急時還能保持冷靜。
例如:
Mr. A can be as cool as a cucumber in the case of an emergency.
A先生在緊急時能保持鎮靜。
有時也用複數:
In a time of hardship, the couple try to be as cool as cucumbers.
遇到困難時,這對夫婦還很從容。
(13) as dead as a doornail :
doornail本是門帽釘或大頭釘。這裡是指完全死了;無疑地死了(total death; no life)
例如:
When John arrived home, his father was as dead as a doornail.(John到家時,老爸已去世)
有時也用複數:
If the rescue team had not come, the two men would have been as dead as doornails.
假如救生隊不來,那兩個人早已死去。
Many Chinese superstitions should be as dead as a doornail.
許多中國的迷信應該成為僵屍。(也可保持習語原型,不用複數 )
(14) as different as chalk and cheese :
粉筆與乾酪本質上截然不同。也就是指兩個人的長相和性格都不同(different in character and appearance)
例如:
Although they are brothers; they seem to be as different as chalk and cheese.
雖然他們是兄弟,他們的長相和性格都不同。
Judging from appearance and personality, Bob and Ed are as different as chalk and cheese.
從外表和性格來看,Bob和Ed完全不同。
這句習語,在英國較為流行。也有人說成: as different as chalk from cheese.
(15) as dry as a bone :
照字義,像骨頭那麼乾燥。也就是十分乾燥,乾透了。這多半是指書本或演講的枯燥無味。(a boring book or speech)
例如:
Some books can be very boring; they are as dry as bones.
有些書很無聊,也很枯燥無味。
His speech seemed to me as dry as a bone.
他的演講,對我而言,十分枯燥。
(16) as dumb as an ox :
像牛一樣笨。指人不聰明,很愚蠢。(stupid person)
例如:
Mr. B seems as dumb as an ox, but in fact he is not.
B先生看來似乎笨如大牛,但他並非如此。
