Am I suitable for IPL Hair Removal?

Prior to commencing treatment, all of our clients must have an initial patch test to determine their suitability for IPL treatment and ascertain the correct level of exposure for their skin type.  In conjunction with this patch test a complimentary initial consultation will enable you to discuss your goals, concerns and expectations about your treatment with our highly qualified specialists.  The ideal candidate for IPL is someone with dark hair and light skin as this contrast allows maximum absorption of light into the hair follicle.  Clients with olive skin can also be treated as long as there is a contrast between hair and skin colour.

What can I expect?

The sensation of the treatment is often described as similar to the feeling of a rubber band flicking against the skin.  The sensation only lasts for a fraction of a second and most clients report a feeling of moderate discomfort with no anaesthesia required. If you have concerns though or are receiving treatment on a sensitive area our experienced therapists will be happy to discuss some pain relieving options available.  

Immediately following the treatment there will be a temporary redness (erythema) to the skin, this will disappear after a short time with most people returning to normal activities immediately. 

How do I prepare for my IPL treatment?

There are several important steps that you can take to achieve the best results from your IPL Hair Removal treatment.  By following these steps you can ensure optimal results while minimising any potential discomfort.  The guidelines below are discussed during your complimentary initial consultation.

• For 4 weeks prior to your treatment, and 2 weeks afterwards, avoid sun exposure or protect the area with an SPF 30+ sunscreen
• Fake tan should not be applied to the area 3 weeks prior to treatment
• Hair should not be waxed, tweezed or bleached for 4 weeks prior to treatment
• There is no need to grow the hair prior to commencing the treatments

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required varies from client to client depending on skin type and hair colour.  An indication of the number of treatments you will need will be provided during your initial consultation.

Laser Hair Removal vs. IPL Hair Removal

People frequently refer to IPL hair removal as laser hair removal or IPL laser hair removal.  Although IPL and laser are both light-based technologies, there are distinct differences between the two.

The major difference is the wavelength of light produced.  Both IPL and Laser Hair Removal work on the principle of heating up and damaging the hair follicle, however instead of using a single wavelength of light IPL utilises a flash lamp to emit various wavelengths. 

IPL Hair Removal is a more recent technology that was developed by a Laser manufacturer with the purpose of replacing laser equipment for cosmetic use.  The aim was to make various treatments possible with just one machine, rather than using different laser machines to treat each condition.

IPL machines typically do not require the high levels of power or energy fluence necessary for lasers.  This level of power generally results in a stronger sensation for clients using Laser treatments than those undergoing IPL.
