Milkmaid Sally was on her way to market. 

倒牛奶的女仆莎莉走在去往集市的路上。

On her pretty head she carried the pail of milk she was going to sell. 

她漂亮的头上顶着她要卖的牛奶的木桶。

And inside the pretty head, she was thinking busy thoughts. 

在她漂亮的脑袋里，充斥着好多想法。

'With the money I get for my milk,' she said to herself as she walked along, 'I shall buy a good hen.'

“等我拿到卖牛奶的钱我要买个母鸡。”她一边走着一边对自己说。

She will lay a whole nestful of eggs -- twenty at least. But I shall not sell them. I shall let her hatch up the whole lot. 

她能生一整窝的蛋——至少要20个。我不要卖了他们。我要等母鸡都孵出小鸡来。

How cute twenty little yellow chicks will be, running around the yard! 

20只小黄鸡在田野里跑着该多么可爱啊！

I shall feed them well, and when they are of a good size, I shall sell them. 

我要好好地喂他们，等他们长大了我再卖了他们。

With the money, I shall buy a fine new dress and a ribbon to go with it. 

有了这个钱我就可以买一条漂亮的新裙子和绑着它的缎带。

I’ll wear them to the fair. And the lads will be crazy about me. But I shall act proud and not look at one of them.' 

我要穿着它们去集市，小伙子们都会为我疯狂。但是我要表现得骄傲一点，看都不看他们一眼。

Here, she tossed her pretty head to show how she would scorn the boys. And down fell the pail of milk, spilling every drop. 

这时，她甩甩自己的头，演示她怎么不屑那些男孩子，然后她头上的牛奶木桶掉了下来，洒得到处都是。

Moral: don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.
