这些动词都相对正式，意指一件事物被另一件事物吸收。Absorb 比其它的稍稍更正式一点，也许使用得也更为广泛。它最严格的意义是专门指吸收液体：the liquid absorbed by the sponge.在更一般的用法中，absorb可以意味着这一行为的完全性：not merely to read the chapter,but to absorb its meaning. 或者它可以强调被包围媒介吸收的事物的完全消失：once-lovely countryside soon absorbed by urban sprawl.Ingest 字面上的意思是为了后来身体的吸收而将食物或药物送入嘴巴的行为。从比喻意义上来说，它指任何吸入以及暗示这一吸入过程所必需的接受性：too tired to ingest even one more idea from the complicated philosophical essay she was reading.
