我以为in the wind是“在风里”，美国朋友捧腹大笑

七八年前，我有个美国客户叫Freddy，一个高大威猛的美国青年，人比较好说话，我趁着带他爬广州白云山，逛北京路，乘船夜游珠江的机会，狂练英语口语，那些天进步了不少。我自以为和他关系比较熟了，然后问了他一些私人问题：

我问他：When will you get married ？

他回答：In the wind.

我心里想着，他说 in the wind在风里，应该是“这个事情吹了，没戏了”的意思，看来要安慰一下。

我说一句“I‘m so sorry to hear that”，然后想起大学口语课，老师说的there are plenty of fish in the sea，大概意思是“天涯何处无芳草，何必单恋一枝花”，积压了多年的口语经典句子，终于要派上用场了！

谁知道我的话还没有出口，Freddy满脸疑惑地看着我：

Why did you say sorry to hear that ？

我解释道：you said something was in the wind，I thought you had broken up with your girlfriend ！( break up with sb 和某人分手）

Freddy似乎明白了我的意思，然后捧腹哈哈大笑：

No， I will get married with her soon， in the wind means something is about to happen.

原来Freddy快要和他女朋友结婚了，并不是婚事泡汤了。

这是一次赤裸裸的culture shock，我们中文中说某事“在风中”，说的是“漂浮不定，没有落地，很缥缈”，而in the wind 在英文中的意思是“即将发生，在酝酿当中”。所以听到in the wind，不要理解成“某事还没有谱，八字胡须没有一撇”。
