从词源(etymology)上来讲critical这个词来自于希腊语kritikos (critic),意思是““of or for judging, able to discern”。Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary中对critical的解释是:exercising or involving careful judgment or judicious evaluation.
Edward M. Glaser在An Experiment in the Development of Critical Thinking(1941)中把critical thinking定义为三个方面:
an attitude of being disposed to consider in a thoughtful way the problems and subjects that come within the range of one's experiences, knowledge of the methods of logical inquiry and reasoning, and some skill in applying those methods.
Asking the Right Questions中对critical thinking的定义和这个如出一辙,作者们把它分为三个维度: 书中用一句话总结: Critical thinking consists of an awareness of a set of interrelated critical quetions, plus the ability and willingness to ask and answer them at appropriate times.
这段话中补充了一个我们经常忽略的一点: ability to ask and answer these critical questions in an appropriate manner. “To feel proud of a particular opinion, it should be one we have selected -- selected from alternative opinions that we have understood and evaluated.” No one is a critical thinker through-and-through, but only to such-and-such a degree, with such-and-such insights and blind spots, subject to such-and-such tendencies towards self-delusion. For this reason, the development of critical thinking skills and dispositions is a life-long endeavor.
The Art of Thinking Clearly,一本是奚恺元的《别做正常的傻瓜》(英文的可以看Predictably Irrational)。 Asking the Right Questions这本书的整体风格是informal,作者说这是写给大众的一本书。 English courses that emphasize expository writing could use this text both as a format for evaluating arguments prior to constructing an essay and as a checklist of problems that the writer should attempt to avoid as she writes.
