Australian algae powered wastewater treatment system set for rural China and South East Asia

An Australian designed wastewater treatment system that uses algae to clean water could soon be deployed to farming communities in China and South East Asia to increase irrigation efficiency.

The system was developed in 2014 by a group of Flinders University researchers led by Professor Howard Fallowfield in South Australia. It has recently received approval by the South Australian Department of Health Wastewater Management.

Some wastewater systems need an intensive aeration sequence and uses outboard motors to oxygenate the water. Furthermore, these models can take up to 65 days to complete treatment. However, the Flinders University model covers around 40% of the space needed by other systems, while reducing the run-time to 5-10 days due to using algae instead of fossil fuels. Water can naturally clean itself by increasing the alkalinity present in it. This can also quicken the entire aeration process, which enables aerobic bio-degradation of pollutants. The system can receive about 12 m3/day – 14 m3/day of wastewater from local communities with the total cost ranging from $100,000 - $200,000 to build.

ReFlex reverse osmosis (RO) process from American company Desalitech successfully purifies high silica groundwater at 94% recovery rate in El Paso, Texas

Desalitech announced today that its ReFlex reverse osmosis(RO) process successfully purified groundwater at the Kay Bailey Hutchison(KBH) Desalination plant in El Paso, Texas, at record high water recovery rates. The announcement was made upon completion of tests conducted by the University of Texas’ Center for Inland Desalination Systems (CIDS) over a period of eight months. The tests successfully demonstrated brackish water desalination operation at 94% recovery without silica (and other) scaling, far exceeding the recovery rates possible with traditional RO technology. The demonstration establishes a new standard for water efficiency in RO processes with significant global financial and environmental implications.

Silica is a natural contaminant present in ground water around the world that is notorious for precipitating in desalination and other membrane processes, producing a dense coating that is nearly impossible to remove. Accordingly, the water recovery rate at which a RO system can operateis limited by the presence of silica and other sparingly soluble constituents. Low-recovery operation results in a high-volume waste stream that requires difficult and expensive treatment or disposal. The prospect of sustainable inland RO operation at recovery rates that exceed the saturation concentrations of these salts represents a technological breakthrough for industrial and municipal water purification.

The 27.5 million gallon per day KBH plant was commissioned in 2007 to supply drinking water to El Paso. The plant assures public water supply despite drought conditions, emergency situations, population growth and salt water intrusion into fresh water aquifers. The plant pumps groundwater from an onsite nearby wellfield to treatment works that include sand strainers, cartridge filters and reverse osmosis equipment. The plant is currently operating at 82.5% recovery, limited by the traditional multi-stage RO design along with the high silica concentrations, resulting in a wastewater streamthat is sent to disposal wells.

CIDS installed a mobile containerized Desalitech RO pilot unit at the KBH plant in June of 2015. The pilot unit was equipped with standard RO membranes, pumps and other components, which operatedat typical membrane flux and cross flow rates. Recovery rates above 90% were sustained for days of continuous testing. The highest recovery achieved without scale formation was 94%, corresponding to silica supersaturation of 273%. For context, traditional RO and distillation systems are generally limited to a maximum of 100% silica saturation. Detailed results of the tests are expected to be published by CIDS.

UV disinfection equipment market predicted to reach $2.8 billion by 2020

© Neotech

According to a new report recently published by Allied Market Research, a full-service market research and business-consulting wing of Allied Analytics LLP, the global ultraviolet (UV) disinfection equipment market has a potential to reach $2.8 billion by 2020, registering a compound annual growth rate of 15.3 percent during 2014-2020. The present progress observed in the market is due to growing environmental concerns, toxicity of industrial wastewater and shrinking freshwater sources. North America holds nearly 40% of the market, as the technology is widely used in the region. However, chemical-based water disinfectants are still prevalent in the developing regions, especially among numerous municipal corporations. Acceptance of UV-based technology in these regions would eventually add to the growth of the market in APAC and LAMEA.

UV disinfection is evolving as the latest technology in the water treatment industry. Replacement of chlorine-based disinfection with advanced disinfection techniques is the key trend boosting the adoption of this technology. Low installation and operational cost, along with residue-less functioning, and ease of maintenance are the key propellants of the UV disinfection market. Moreover, it nearly doubles the operational efficiency in water treatment, compared to chlorine-based disinfection techniques. The growth of the healthcare and chemical industry is also creating tremendous opportunities for the UV disinfection equipment market. However, widespread use of chlorine-based, low-cost disinfection methods is a major restraint for the market.

UV disinfection finds its uses in diversified areas, mainly in water treatment, wastewater treatment, air treatment, process-water treatment, and surface disinfection. Among these, water treatment leads the market, accounting to almost 60% of the total market share, as it is a volume-driven application. Wastewater treatment indicates the maximum potential for growth during the forecasted period. Scarcity of freshwater is a major concern globally; therefore, there is a growing emphasis on the treatment and reuse of wastewater, which would boost the growth of this application.

The report also analyzes the application of water treatment in municipalities, residences and commercial sectors. Currently, municipal water treatment segment holds more than 50% of the share in the water treatment application of UV equipment. Use of this equipment in municipal water treatment has increased significantly, as it is considered to be an efficientand eco-friendly system that eliminates the use of chemicals. Therefore, several municipalities have started transforming their chemical-based disinfection plants to UV light-based plants. Residential water disinfection is the second largest revenue-generating application followed by commercial applications.

Hitachi to merge its water facility engineering and RO membrane manufacturing units

Hitachi has decided to merge its water facility engineering business Aqua Works and Engineering with its reverse osmosis (RO) membrane manufacturing unit Aqua-Tech Engineering in Singapore.

Aqua Works and Engineering handles Hitachi's water related facilities for commercial and public segments, while Hitachi Aqua-Tech Engineering manages design, production, maintenance and sales of RO membrane systems.

After the merger on 1 April 2016, the two companies will operate under the name Hitachi Aqua-Tech. After completion of the merger, Hitachi Aqua-Tech has targeted annual revenues of nearly $27.9m by 2018 in Asia. The merger aims at strengthening the Water and Environmental Solutions Business targeting resorts, high-rise condominiums and commercial facilities in Asia and island countries.

Hitachi will combine Aqua-Tech's RO membrane systems with Aqua Works' water landscape facilities to add more projects through the two companies' customer bases. Hitachi expects to enjoy an increased demand for RO membranesystems at commercial buildings, resorts and emerging countries in Asia, as well as landscape facilities, such as fountains and pools that use water.

Scientists find hydraulic fracking contaminated Wyoming water

Two scientists have highlighted dangerous water contamination from a fracking operation in Wyoming. The report found there were dangerous levels of chemicals in the underground water supply used by the 230 residents of Pavillion, a small town in central Wyoming. Levels of benzine, a flammable liquid used in fuel, were 50 times above the allowable limit, while chemicals were dumped in unlined pits and cement barriers to protect groundwater were inadequate, the research found.

The research finds that workers were drilling at very shallow depths, as little as 700ft underground, placing the fracking operation uncomfortably close to the drinking water aquifer that supplies the wells used by Pavillion residents.

The water contamination caused by the fracking was compounded by questionable practices going back to the 1960s, before fracking took place, such as the dumping of chemicals into unlined pits. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a process where water and chemicals are injected underground in order to draw out gas or oil resources from rock formations.
