Goodbye America: leaving Afghans to the Taliban

The British left, taking with them 15,000 people as well as 173 cats and dogs. The French lowered their tricolour and departed, taking 3,000 people, including more than 2,600 Afghans. Germany got out 5,100 before ending its own airlift. Last to leave were the Americans, fulfilling President Joe Biden’s promise to depart by August 31st. “Our country gained its full independence,” a spokesman for the Taliban tweeted afterwards.

They leave behind a country largely controlled by the Taliban, although there are occasional attacks by militants from Islamic State Khorasan Province, the group that launched the devastating assault on Kabul airport on August 26th. The Taliban said they will not announce a government until all foreigners had left. Now that the Americans have gone, Afghans may soon discover what the Taliban have in store for them. Another, possibly bleak, chapter in Afghanistan’s turbulent history begins.

  • 英国人走了,带着那15000人在战场上勇于拼杀的将士们,以及在这片寂寥的土地上与他们相依相伴的173只猫猫狗狗们;

  • 法国人黯然神伤地降下了这面飘扬在战火纷飞的土地上已达20年的三色旗,离开了,带走了3000人,还包括着2600多名阿富汗兄弟;

  • 德国人走了,在最后一架军机的舱门缓缓关闭时,他们望了望这片为之奋斗却毫无成就的土地。军机起飞了,运走了5100位在这片土地上抛洒过热血的同胞们;

as well as 以及 ;  既…

more than 比…

They leave behind a country largely controlled by the Taliban, although there are occasional attacks by militants from Islamic State Khorasan Province, the group that launched the devastating assault on Kabul airport on August 26th. The Taliban said they will not announce a government until all foreigners had left. Now that the Americans have gone, Afghans may soon discover what the Taliban have in store for them. Another, possibly bleak, chapter in Afghanistan’s turbulent history begins.

in store for …

You never know what's in store for you.
