On the plane they had lunch and dinner. When they arrived in New York they just wanted to go to bed. They went by bus to the center of town. It was Saturday, so the streets of Manhattan weren’t too crowded. Most New Yorkers don’t go to work on Saturdays; they stay at home in the suburbs. Their hotel was on the 22^nd Street. They took a taxi. The taxi driver was Puerto Rican and he spoke mainly Spanish. They didn’t learn Spanish at school.

在下列情况下不用定冠词：

1． 在诸如in bed/to bed, at work/to work, at home等短语中：

They wanted to go to bed.  They don’t go to work.

    They stay at home.

      2．在谈到节日、星期几的短语中：

  It was Saturday.  They don’t go to work on Saturdays .

in June   at Christmas   before Christmas

3．在表示一日三餐饭时：They had lunch and dinner.

4．在学校课程前：They didn’t learn Spanish at school.

5．在诸如下列表示时间的短语中 last week   next month   next Monday

6．在诸如by bus, by train等的短语中（可以看成用具体名词的抽象用法，表示方法或手段）：  They went by bus.

7．表示一个独一无二的身份、职位时：In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States.

8．可数名词用复数名词表类时：Lions like living in groups.(但如果用单数表示类别，则需用定冠词或不定冠词，如：The lion likes living in groups. A lion likes living in groups.)
