在阿尔，梵高深深地着迷于南方夜空那不同寻常的美，他即刻用调色板上的颜料画了下来。“深蓝色的天空中镶嵌着颜色更深的云彩，浓的比最浓的钴蓝还要蓝些，而浅的比星河的蓝白色还要苍白些。在这蓝色背景下星星闪着光芒:绿色的，黄色的，白色的，粉色的;比我们家乡甚至巴黎的星星更耀眼，它们比较接近于珠宝;可以与猫眼石、绿宝石、天青石、红宝石或蓝宝石相美。”在他当前的境况下，绝望的日子中间或充斥着一点希望，他笔下的夜空闪烁着别样的美。

这一期间的另一幅画中，深蓝色在小房屋顶上延伸出去，天空中布满了超乎人类感知的神奇的生命。星星和月亮呈现为一圈圈的明亮圆环状，而处在漩涡中的天体彼此之间也在移动。在宇宙间生命的漩涡面前，人类看起来渺小而无助。在这个世界中，所有形象的比例都被改变了。渺小的人物在一条可怕而粗糙的、看上去像一条湍急河流的路上做梦。巨大的柏树冲进夜空中，像是火焰一般。
